Please take the following dozen exhibits as proof that the CSS border property is a lot cooler than we give it credit for. But border can be a great way to add a bit of visual style to your anchors without adding that great bit of accessibility that the underline provides.

That gives me a nice dotted border that turns solid when the user hovers over the link. A while back, I ran across a cool little technique for faking a postage stamp using the CSS border property.

Now, you could obviously take this even further with a bit of skill and a degree in something other than Rhetoric, but I think you get the idea.

You can see the example live here. Borders are a great way to make your excellent images stand out even more. As you can see, the technique can be subtle but visually pleasing if used properly. You can craft a coupon easily with just a bit of CSS:. Blockquotes are often useful, seldom used. But if you have a website that often refers to the words of others, a well-styled blockquote will go a long way towards impressing your readers with your borrowed prose:. If you ever take over a website or perhaps built a website that is still using the Code of Yesteryear, consider turning to CSS and the border property for help hunting down bits of HTML soup that could use a bit less seasoning:.

For more information on this useful technique, see my article on finding deprecated elements with diagnostic CSS highlighting. It just might save your life someday. But I doubt it. So far, all of our techniques have had one thing in common: boxy edges.

This article from last August shows us that CSS3 offers us a way of breaking out of — or at least bending the corners of — the CSS box:.

The border-radius properties allow us to round the corners of elements without having to resort to images. Cool indeed! Of course, not all angles are bad angles… if used properly. Way back in the day, CSS guru Eric Meyer pointed out a way to use borders to create some pretty wicked angles.

And now for a bit of fun! The following excellent and cool examples are all drawn using the CSS border property. Check out tanfa. It leans heavily on the border property to create the buildings and windows. Christopher Hester is a man with fantastic CSS skill, incalculable patience, and presumably no girlfriend — at least until he started impressing the ladies with this house he built with the CSS border property.

And be sure to check out his second CSS house, which he built using background colors and approximately 50 gazillion non-semantic divs. If you know of any other fantastic uses for the CSS border property, be sure to mention them in the comments! Tip: The border-radius property is actually a shorthand property for the border-top-left-radiusborder-top-right-radiusborder-bottom-right-radius and border-bottom-left-radius properties. The border-radius property can have from one to four values. Here are the rules:. Four values - border-radius: 15px 50px 30px 5px; first value applies to top-left corner, second value applies to top-right corner, third value applies to bottom-right corner, and fourth value applies to bottom-left corner :.

Three values - border-radius: 15px 50px 30px; first value applies to top-left corner, second value applies to top-right and bottom-left corners, and third value applies to bottom-right corner :. Two values - border-radius: 15px 50px; first value applies to top-left and bottom-right corners, and the second value applies to top-right and bottom-left corners :. One value - border-radius: 15px; the value applies to all four corners, which are rounded equally:.

You can overshoot with custom timing functions, and produce spring-like effects, but the relative movement along the X and Y-axis will always be identical. CSS animations and transitions restrict us to animating along straight paths. By always taking the shortest path from point A to point B.

The most straightforward way of animating between two points in CSS with hardware acceleration is to use transform to translate an object over time.

This produces movement along a linear path. To understand the solution to the problem we need to, at least visually, take the animation apart.

border-radius

Put another way, we move the object px to the right, and px upwards, and these two translations combined move the object at an angle. So how do we create a curved path like the one showcased in the earlier example? The previous examples all used linear timing functions, but if we add a container around the object we want to animate, we can apply one timing function for the X-axis, and another one for the Y-axis. So, how do we actually combine two animations? We put one object inside another, and run one animation on the container element, and a different one on the child element.

To clearly see how the two objects interact in the curved examples, we can change the container to render a bordered box:. Rather than adding two objects in our HTML, though, we can produce a pseudo-element. If we have this in our HTML:. Then we need two separate animation blocks: one for the X-axis, and one for the Y-axis.

Notice how one uses ease-inwhile the other one uses ease-out :. With some custom bezier curves that overshoot we can produce the example showcased at the beginning of the post:. Layered animation works just as well with the transition property, if you only need to animate from point A to point B. If you have an absolutely positioned element you can achieve a curved path by animating the left and bottom properties, of a single element, and avoid the need of a container element. You will also learn how to use just CSS to add underlines to text and content.

HTML has the hr tag to declare a thematic break for content. In older HTML specifications the HR tag was just a horizontal rule and did not provide the semantic meaning it does now. Today it does not provide a visible break, but should be styled using CSS. This gives more control to the designer to make the HR tag match the site's theme. Since the beginning of HTML, or at least as far back as I can remember the U element has been a quick and dirty way to insert a horizontal line or horizontal rule to a web page.

Mee6 commands

The U element is great because it can be used for the following scenarios:. Browsers draw a line across the entire width of the container, which can be the entire body or a child element. Originally the HR element was styled using attributes.

Today, with HTML5, the HR tag has become semantic, which means it tells the browser, assistive reading technology and other automated system there is a paragraph-level thematic break. This is a break in the content flow, but not a new page. It better serves as a visual queue of a change in topic. For example, you could place them at the end of a section, before a new sub-header. Not only does this use the right system CSS to define rendering rules it allows you to reuse the same rule many times.

This makes your code more maintainable and your layouts more consistent. Browsers render the line by applying the styles to a combination of the background and border styles. The border is the primary style for the default line.

Removing the border also removes the line. An invisible line can still be useful to provide the semantic information to the user agent without visual clutter that may interfere with the desired user experience.

You can control the line's width by setting the width property and then centering it using the following CSS rule. You can also adjust the line's thickness by setting the height value. Color is set using the background-color property. As a bonus you can also use the opacity property to make the line semi-transparent. The typical browser sets the margin to roughly half a character's width.

But you can change this to any value you want. This can add quality white space to your layouts and emphasize the content break. You can apply many different style variations to your horizontal lines. You are not limited to just color and width. Here I set the horizontal line's background style to an image of 5 yellow stars. I then made them repeat on the x-axis while centering the line. Pro-tip: set the background color to transparent so you don't accidentally show a color behind the image.

Adjusting the border size, color, and style will make the line look different and has the same effect in all modern browsers. For example, in this demonstration the border is red, dashed, and 1px wide:. You can set a single radius to make circular corners, or two radii to make elliptical corners.

This property is a shorthand to set the four properties border-top-left-radiusborder-top-right-radiusborder-bottom-right-radiusand border-bottom-left-radius. The radius applies to the whole backgroundeven if the element has no border; the exact position of the clipping is defined by the background-clip property.

The border-radius property does not apply to table elements when have shared or separate borders. It is often used to define a size as relative to an element's parent object. Numerous properties can use percentages, such as width, height, margin, padding, and font-size. Get the latest and greatest from MDN delivered straight to your inbox.
